my life: under the weather

Monday evening I fell ill and was sick all day Tuesday. This morning I’m still not feeling my best, but I’m definitely doing much better, thanks to a (safe) combination of medication and other little comforts, such as:

  • Ginger ale
  • Naps with Madison
  • Sweatpants and blankets
  • Texts from great friends
  • House Hunters and Arrested Development
  • A long, hot bath
  • A warm pasta meal when I felt up to eating
  • Laughs with Dan, who took care of me so wonderfully

What makes you feel better when you’re sick?

use it: nail polish

Polishes I’m loving lately:

L’Oreal Colour Riche in Jet Set to Paris: I’ve been interested in trying this line of nail polish for little while now. Coincidentally, I’ve been looking for a royal blue shade – so it all worked out! This polish was a reasonable price and easy to apply. It did chip a little easily, but I didn’t put any top coat on it and was working in a pool a lot, so take that as you will.

Sally Hansen Complete Salon Manicure in Right Said Red underneath OPI’s Minnie Mouse collection in Nothin’ Mousie ‘Bout It: I have blogged about my love for Sally Hansen Complete Salon Manicure before, so we won’t get into that. Instead let’s discuss my love of OPI’s special nail polish collections, such as the Nicki Minaj collection or this summer’s Minnie Mouse inspired group. I think OPI has some of the most fun polish names in the business, and I’m always happy with the results I get when I use the brand. I was super excited for Nothin’ Mousie ‘Bout It. I’ve been really drawn to glitter polishes and top coats lately, and not only is Nothin’ Mousie ‘Bout It have a very faint pink glitter gel, but it has adorable pink hearts in it! The application of the polish was a bit involved, at least in order to achieve the look I wanted. I first only got the pink glitter gel on the brush and smoothed that on my nail. Next, while it was still wet, I dabbed individual hearts where I wanted them. I waited for that all to dry, and then I smoothed just the pink glitter gel on again over it all. It lasted well and made me so happy every time I looked at my nails!

Essie Sand Tropez underneath Essie Luxe Effects As Gold As it Gets: I’ve had Sand Tropez since last summer, but haven’t used it since. It just feels like a summer appropriate shade, both in looks and name. I have gotten pretty tan this summer from working at the pool so much, and the soft beige looked great in contrast. I added As Gold As it Gets over it, and the combo is my absolute new favorite for summer. I can’t get enough!

What polishes have you been enjoying lately?

…feel like summer has been moving way too fast?

…feel strange with unpainted fingernails?

…have trouble sleeping without their dog (or cat) cuddled up next to them?

…wish the summer Olympics happened more frequently than every four years?

…love kicking back with a bowl of popcorn and a funny movie after a long week?

…think it’s just as fun to go through the drive-thru as an adult as it was as a kid?

…enjoy starting the day with a big cup of coffee and morning news and talk shows?

…feel like they could eat Mediterranean cuisine for every meal for the rest of eternity?

new year’s all year update: july reflections and august goals

In January I introduced the 2012 New Year’s All Year Challenge, in which I made broad “endpoint” goals for the year and explained that each month I will make specific small goals that are stepping stones to my endpoint aims. Each month I will also reflect on the previous month’s goals and efforts.

July goals:

  • Health: reevaluate goals/change in habits for healthy eating and try each of the nine classes at my gym at least once
  • Finances: complete the Take Control Bootcamp through LearnVest
  • Relationships: don’t judge others
  • Wedding: revisit/revise complete wedding to-do list and start knocking things off! (particularly photographer, DJ, and bridal party wear)
  • Career: apply for full-time positions as they get posted and continue reading nonfiction books and articles
  • Self-enrichment: practice gratitude

July reflections:

Health: I met with my nutritionist again and we revamped my eating guidelines so they offered more variety and flexibility, but still promoted good habits and a healthy calorie count. I did not try all nine classes at my gym at least once. I think that might have been a little too ambitious for attempting in one month, at least a month in which I worked evenings a lot.  I did try three of the nine classes: kick (kickboxing), centergy (yoga/pilates mix), and group power (strength training). Kick and centergy were awesome, but group power was pretty rough on my knees, particularly the one I had surgery on several years ago. I think I’ll try that one again when I’ve lost some weight and grown a bit stronger. Finances: I did not complete the Take Control bootcamp. I did read a lot of articles on LearnVest about student loans and how to manage paying them back, which helped me feel more in control. Relationships: don’t judge others. I didn’t do the best with this goal this month, though when I started having petty thoughts I would recognize why it was wrong and stop. Wedding: Our wedding plans changed in a big way this month. Our budget changed, so our wedding plans had to adjust accordingly. We needed to change halls, so that took precedent over looking for photographers or DJs, and great new hall was found! : )  Career: I did well with applying for jobs and reading articles and nonfiction books. Self-enrichment: I struggled with practicing gratitude at times, but I always tried to reflect and focus on the positive.

  • Finances: continue to read more about finances through LearnVest and complete a bootcamp (Take Control or Getting Hitched)
  • Relationships: don’t judge others and carry out little kindnesses
  • Wedding: Find a photographer!!!
  • Career: apply for full-time positions as they get posted, start planning out pre-season plans for 2012-13 swim season, and review educational methods and theories
  • Self-enrichment: practice gratitude
